Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay

Did you know that the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay was actually a medium-sized town in the ancient province of Aquitaine? And today, it's one of the best-preserved!

This site, estimated at 25 hectares (or 250,000 square meters, the equivalent of the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris or 34.41 football pitches!), is a veritable thriving city occupied from the 1st to the 4th century, with houses, shops, a theater, thermal baths, and a sanctuary. Its particularity is that it is crossed by a river, the Vonne.

Abandoned from the 4th century, the site was then exploited as a stone quarry.

It was not until the end of the 19th century that it was excavated by a man (and his team): Father Camille de la Croix.

After being listed as a historic monument in 1882, the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay was purchased by the State in 1884. The acquisition of new plots in 1995 means that the site is now a 15-hectare archaeological reserve.

The Hell Pit - EXIREUIL

for its landscape and environmental qualities but also for its picturesque and legendary character. There is remarkable flora in the wooded areas of the rocky outcrops. A path leads to the heart of nature, along the edge of a stream and its waterfall. Legend has it that a peasant who crossed the tumultuous waters with his cart was swept away and disappeared forever in "the Well of Hell". The site of the Well of Hell is registered as a Sensitive Natural Area at the departmental level. A Tèrra Aventura trail invites you to a fun and educational discovery of this exceptional site.
